Current VAT Rate
The current standard VAT rate in the UK is 20%. This rate has been in effect since 4 January 2011.
VAT Rates in the UK:
- Standard rate: 20% - This applies to most goods and services
- Reduced rate: 5% - This applies to some goods and services, such as children's car seats and home energy
- Zero rate: 0% - This applies to most food items, books, newspapers, and children's clothes
VAT Rate History:
- 4 January 2011 - present: 20%
- 1 January 2010 - 3 January 2011: 17.5%
- 1 December 2008 - 31 December 2009: 15% (temporary reduction)
- 1 April 1991 - 30 November 2008: 17.5%
It's important to note that while the standard rate is 20%, not all goods and services are subject to this rate. Some items are charged at the reduced rate of 5%, while others are zero-rated or exempt from VAT altogether.
